Why RTK Boundaries?

Function:

Boundaries have an important function in precision agriculture to define a grower’s field shape and area.  The most basic use of boundaries is to inform a monitor and mapping software where your field is located and equally important – where your field is not located. Boundaries help coordinate on/off commands to clutches and sprayer valves, determine A-B lines, sort past and new data in management software and help measure area for input calculations.

Accuracy:

Who hasn’t disagreed with the FSA maps total acreage and accuracy of the field boundaries?  This may especially be true in the case with waterways and ditches. It might have the right location and the shape may be nearly correct -but if used to control clutches it would be a disaster. So let’s examine what type of accuracy is required to control a machine.

At first, WAAS sounds great. It’s free and simple, but it’s not intended for all scenarios.  If you record your boundaries with WAAS, they could be off by about 8 inches north of the target. If you plant using WAAS with clutches, you may also be off 8 inches south of the target.  In this situation your clutches could miss-plant the target by 16 inches! What’s your neighbor going to say?

If you are using mixed accuracies it gets somewhat complicated. It would be possible for an RTK Boundary with OmniStar XP planter to be off as much as 6 inches. RTK boundaries do not ensure sub-inch error unless it is paired with an RTK machine.  See the table below, green is the boundary, yellow the machine control.

Summary

At Labre Crop Consulting we provide the highest quality RTK boundaries for our customers.  Our modern equipment is fully RTK capable using the latest software and firmware, and we run boundaries using a 4-wheeler. We fully understand that our boundary is controlling your machine, so we take great care in making sure the boundary is perfect. Once the boundaries are collected we process them in our office, have them approved by the farmer, and then they can be imported into any monitor.  If you are interested in accuracy, feel free to call the office and speak with us. Just make sure to get it done before the dust starts rolling!
